    How splitting by income works

Each person pays the same share of the cost as their share of the combined income. If one earns 3,000 and the other 2,000, together they earn 5,000: the first pays 60% of every shared bill and the second 40%. On 1,200 of rent, that is 720 and 480.

    Which method is fair?

    • Equally: simplest, and fair when everyone uses the same amount and earns about the same.
    • By income: common for couples and families, so the bills weigh the same on everyone.
    • Percentages: when you have agreed a ratio, like 70/30.
    • Shares: when some people count double, like the bigger room or a couple sharing one room.

Amounts are rounded to the cent and the leftover cents go to the people at the top of the list, so the parts always add up to the total.
